How do you Compete w/Free?

Wired editor Chris Anderson speaks about tech trends and how to compete with 'free'.

If you think tech trends have nothing to do with your business, think again.

He gives a simple formula for predicting when movement is called for.

Change is king.

Go tell it on the mountain

Nine steps to create a successful vlogvertising campaign.

Step 1:
Explain to your vlogvertiser how vlogvertising will generate more business
for their business. This seems simple enough but is rather complex. More
often than not your vlogvertiser will not understand vlogvertising and will
find it similar to explaining to an advertiser that advertising it a worthwhile
endeavor. This is noted is the (alt.) ixiom :: "It pays to Vlogvertise".
To vlogvertise is to economize so, choose your words carefully.
Good Luck.

Tagging the World As We Know it :: Open Source Radio Re-Vlog

From Open Source Radio, a podcast worth listening to about taxonomy and as human beings participate more fully in the process of naming things, folksonomy, and how that naming relates to marketing. They discuss the implications of the folksonomic revolution on real estate in particular.

It all comes down to access and - more importantly - re-access - to information.

The infrastructure of meaning...

From Christopher Lydon's show notes:
"David Weinberger, one of the smartest of our many smart neighbors, has a new book about books and planets, Staples and Amazon, 20 questions and the periodic table, Carl Linnaeus and Melvil Dewey, data and metadata — about everything, in other words: Everything is Miscellaneous.

A Meditation on Vlogvertising :: Francois Truffaut

"The film of tomorrow will not be directed by civil servants of the camera, but by artists for whom shooting a film constitutes a wonderful and thirlling adventure...it will be enjoyable because it will be true and new...the film of tomorrow will be an act of love." -Francois Truffaut
This quote comes courtesy of Brian Gonzalez, one of Wburg.TV's intrepid film makers.

When I spoke to my father about what I was up to with vlogvertising, he pointed me to this Forbes piece on the subject of marketing:

"Great brands and great companies have been built on the back of mass media. You fill your funnel with attention and slowly turn that attention into cash. Traditionally that's how marketers convert strangers into customers. Whoever has the biggest funnel wins. TV is a great funnel filler, and so is direct mail. For a while it even seemed that Internet banners would keep the attention coming, cheaper and cheaper, in large volume. Best of all, you could control just about every element of the process.

"Bad news for control freaks everywhere: Your funnel is broken and you're not in charge anymore."
Yup.

Forbes' first advice is to, "...Flip the funnel; turn it into a megaphone. But not as a device to yell at people who don't want to hear from you. Instead, hand the megaphone to your best customers, who can help turn their friends and colleagues into your new best customers."

This comment made me giggle: "The biggest mistake marketers make when they see the power of the consumer network is that they try to control it, own it or manipulate it."

Yup.

Forbes writer Seth Godin finishes with this:

"Great companies don't push, they lead."

Yup.

The easiest way to lead is to have a great product / business and love it.

POST NOTE FROM THE FAUX PRESS: Jose appears in a cameo role in our most recent vlogvertising effort for Prudential Douglas Elliman Real Estate (editing comes along nicely, by the way). He's the tech guy behind the counter at Champion Wireless. He knows phones inside and out. I can tell just by the way he handles 'em.

Grand Relax Girls

Grand Relax girls.

Nothing like a buck-a-minute chair massage to transform a stressful day right back to perfect.

The day I shot my first ever vlogvertising commercial for The Lodge restaurant (right down the street @ Havemeyer) I went there (at Bi-Offal's suggestion) with composer Andrew Shapiro for a ten-minute attitude adjustment.

Andrew was tense 'cause I'd interviewed him. There's no doubt that interviews are stressful, even if it's with the Faux Press. I was tense with excitement from the bump up to official commercial vlogger.

The women are professional and sweet.

Aaaah.

Wburg.TV :: Vol. 1, No. 2

Could only devote two days to editing Vol. 1, No. 2. I say this not by way of apology, but rather as acknowledgement of how its relative simplicity is embraced. Intention as by-product of exegency.

David Howell's been given a lot of space here; couldn't bear to cut a single frame of his performance. David's the real deal.

Weagel-as-Human-Dog (as always) makes me laugh from an unexpected place as his Professor plays God to Howell's fear and frustration.

We're delighted to welcome 11211 Office, Prudential Douglas Elliman Real Estate, Champion Wireless, Baci & Abbracci Restaurant / Pizza, and Optical Warehouse as advertisers.

Wrapped principal photography on our first in-house vlogvertising piece for Prudential Douglas Elliman Real Estate this Sunday past, and look forward to cutting it this week.
